18-WHEELER CATCHES FIRE ON NORTH FREEWAY AT WEST ROAD AFTER MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH

An 18-Wheeler caught fire this morning after a seven-vehicle crash on North Freeway at West Road. Officers were called to the scene around 5:00 a.m. with reports of a vehicle pileup and truck fire, according to Sergeant Thomas Fendi of the Houston Police Department.

According to Sergeant Fendi, the accident began when a pickup truck attempted to pull over due to having a blown tire. Three vehicles behind the truck began to slow down when a fourth vehicle slammed into the third vehicle. A fifth driver, who police presume was drunk, hit the fourth car and sideswiped a sixth vehicle. The big rig 18-wheeler driver swerved in an attempt to miss the six-car pileup, causing his truck to roll over and burst into flames.

First responders found the truck driver in the 18-wheeler and were able to pull him to safety. The driver, who was identified as 40-year-old Raul Diaz, was taken to a nearby hospital and suffered only minor injuries.
