HOUSTON AMONG COUNTRY’S MOST DANGEROUS FOR BIKERS AND PEDESTRIANS
Statistics show that Houston-area drivers have mowed down nearly 2,000 pedestrians and cyclists. That is more than 100 deaths a year! On top of that, there have been more than 350 serious injuries to pedestrians and cyclists in the past three years.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, vehicle crashes are down. However, pedestrian accidents are the highest they have been in for almost 30 years.
WHAT IS CAUSING THE INCREASE
Since 2014 light truck and crossover SUV sales have surged. They are heavier, bigger, and deadlier for pedestrians. 94% of accidents are caused by human error and distracted driving leads the list of reasons for these crashes. However, other hazards can lead to serious injury or even death. For example, in January, the family of long-time Houston Rockets scout Brent “B.J.” Johnson, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Pulice Construction Inc. They claim the company failed to adequately mark a “dangerously unfinished” section of the sidewalk where Mr. Johnson was killed in a bike crash.
TOP PEDESTRIAN/BICYCLE ACCIDENT RISK FACTORS
Driver
- Distracted driving (cell phone, eating, applying makeup)
- Speeding or ignoring traffic signals
- Alcohol impairment
Roadways
- Roadway hazards
- Lack of crosswalks
- No biker/pedestrian lanes or sidewalks
FOUR THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF WHILE CYCLING, WALKING OR RUNNING
The Potts Law Firm wants you to stay safe. While you can’t change others’ driving behaviors or ensure every road is free from hazards, AAA lists some things you can do to help ensure your safety while bicycling or engaging in other pedestrian activities.
- Be Visible. Make sure drivers see you. Wear light or reflective gear if out while dark.
- Stay Alert. Avoid distractions including cell phone use, texting, and reading.
- Follow the Rules. Cross at intersections or crosswalks and cross with traffic signals.
- Use Safe Paths. Stay off highways or unsafe roads. Use available sidewalks or bike lanes.
