TWO HOSPITALIZED AFTER EXPOSURE TO TOXIC CHEMICALS AT WEST OCEAN CITY RESORT POOL
On Thursday, May 26th, at the Francis Scott Key Family Resort’s indoor pool, a woman and child were exposed to toxic chemicals accidentally released during a routine pool pump maintenance. The Ocean City Fire Department was dispatched to the resort’s indoor pool after reports of the two individuals having severe difficulty breathing. The woman and her six-year-old child were taken to John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore soon after.
The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s investigation revealed the cause of the illnesses. It was stated that during the cleaning process, both muriatic acid and chlorine were accidentally released causing toxic gas to form that discharged into the pool where the individuals had been swimming. Worcester County Hazmat Team technicians rendered the scene safe, however; the pool was closed indefinitely.
