On Monday December 6, 2021, St. Augustine Preparatory Academy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin experienced a dangerous chemical leak today. A hazardous concentration of chlorine leaked into the prep school’s pool while students were participating in swim class. Once noticed, the pool area was evacuated and ventilated. The students exposed quickly developed breathing problems and were transported by ambulance to Children’s Wisconsin Hospital. The hospital treated 21 students and 8 students were admitted.

Chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas with a pungent, irritating odor with toxic and corrosive abilities. It is most commonly used as a sanitizing agent, used in bleach, pesticide, and pools to keep bacteria and algae at bay. However, pool application is at a low and monitored concentration. At high levels, chlorine creates a hazardous environment in the water and air as it evaporates. Exposure to high chlorine concentration can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat, respiratory issues such as coughing and damaged lungs, and substernal pain. In extreme cases, bronchial pneumonia and death can occur.

St. Augustine Prep claims the cause was due to a deteriorated and malfunctioned valve controlling the level of chlorine to be released into the pool. However, additional investigation is necessary to determine fault and liability.
