General Motors (GM) recently announced a recall of over 1 million pickups and SUVs for possible steering malfunctions. So far, there have been at least 30 crashes and two injuries related to the defect, according to GM.
GM estimates the steering wheel defect will affect around 20,400 of the 1.02 million recalled vehicles. Of those recalled, approximately 448,800 are Chevrolet Silverado pickups – GM’s most popular vehicle.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulatory document issued on September 12, 2018, GM’s recalled vehicles may experience a temporary loss of power steering followed by a sudden return, especially during low-speed turning maneuvers.
The document goes on to say, “If EPS [Electrical Power Steering] assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.”
GM intends to notify vehicle owners and dealers of the recall, updating the EPS software free of charge
