14 CAMPERS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL FROM CHLORINE VAPORS AT COLLEGE CAMPUS POOL
On Monday, July 18, 2022, fourteen members of a soccer camp, ages ranging from 10 to 17, were taken to a New Jersey hospital after becoming ill while at a Drew University swimming pool. The juveniles were said to have been exposed to higher-than-normal chlorine levels during summer camp around 12:20 pm and reported having breathing problems.
The county deployed its medical ambulance bus and a hazmat team to the area and the campers received medical attention on the scene. They were later transported to Morristown Medical Center for further observations. According to Morris County Emergency Management Director Jeffrey Paul, “Initial reports indicated that some of the children were suffering from shortness of breath, difficulty speaking between breaths, nausea, and general airway issues,” Madison authorities stated the campers developed symptoms of chlorine inhalation when “a tiny amount of chlorine was mistakenly spilled” at the Simon Forum Pool just after midday. Some of the campers had reportedly smelled chlorine vapors and were even vomiting in a nearby area due to the toxic fumes. It was not immediately clear how the chemical was leaked.
Chlorine is used for sanitation purposes and helps prevent bacteria growth in swimming pools. However, if mishandled, the chemical can quickly turn deadly when a certain amount is inhaled or ingested. Some common symptoms of chlorine gas poisoning include:
