400 Accidents Reported During Houston Ice Storm

OVER 400 CAR ACCIDENTS REPORTED DURING HOUSTON ICE STORM

On January 16th, 2018, Houston experienced an influx of frozen rain and snow in the first major winter storm of 2018. The Houston Independent School District and hundreds of local businesses announced they would be closed due to inclement weather until road conditions cleared.

Thousands of Houstonians were advised by Mayor Sylvester Turner to stay off roads and sidewalks in an attempt to protect civilians from dangerous, icy conditions. Despite warnings and road treatments by the Texas Department of Transportation, car accidents far exceeded normality. The Houston Country Sheriff’s Office reported over 400 accidents on Houston roads between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. on January 16th.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted Tuesday:

“The average number of traffic crashes in a 24-hour period is about 226, today we’ve had well over 300 in a 9-hour period despite much lighter traffic after many folks heeded Sylvester Turner’s warning. Roadway conditions remain treacherous throughout the region and will be until 1 p.m. Wednesday.”

Chief Art Acevedo also expressed concern over unsafe driving he and other officers witnessed during the storm. Many Houston drivers were not taking necessary precautions while driving which inevitably lead to many of these accidents.
