GM RECALLS 400,000+ VEHICLES FOR AUTOMOBILE DEFECTS
On Friday, July 9, General Motors (GM) issued a recall of over 410,000 of its vehicles for defective roof rail or side air curtain inflators. These inflators can go off randomly throwing pieces of metal and plastic throughout the vehicle at high rates of speed and potentially causing injury to any occupants in the vehicle. The company states a manufacturing defect allowed moisture into the inflator during manufacturing, causing corrosion. These inflators were made in Mexico by Joyson Safety Systems. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), General Motors is recalling certain 2010 through 2016 Chevrolet Silverados (1500, 2500, and 3500 models), as well as 2015 and 2016 Sierras (1500, 2500, and 3500s models). Owners of affected vehicles will be notified beginning August 16th. Dealers will replace both side air bag modules at no cost to owners.
At least 3 incidents of these exploding inflators have been reported to General Motors and NHTSA. According to GM, it became aware of these exploding inflators in mid-June of this year.
