I-25 Crash in New Mexico Leaves 3 Dead & 24 Injured

A crash that involved a commercial passenger bus, operated by El Paso-Los Angeles Limousine Express, and three other vehicles on New Mexico Interstate 25 early Sunday morning left three people dead and 24 others injured.

According to Lt. Keith Elder, a spokesman for the Sandoval County Sherriff’s Office, the accident began when the driver of a vehicle rear-ended a pickup truck just north of Bernalillo (10 miles from Albuquerque, New Mexico). The driver of the car was ejected from the vehicle. Elder stated the impact caused “… the pick-up truck to cross the barrier cable in the median of the Interstate, coming to a stop facing North on I-25. The car came to a rest in the left traffic lane of I-25.” The car did not have its lights on and wasn’t visible in the left lane.

The driver of the commercial passenger bus traveling southbound swerved to avoid hitting the rear-ended vehicle and its driver but lost control of the bus; rolling it onto its right side. The passenger bus was then sideswiped by a northbound semi-truck.

The 35 passengers trapped inside the bus were rescued by responders who used tools to pry apart the wreckage of the crashed vehicles. A reported 38 people were treated at the scene, suffering from injuries of broken bones, lacerations to the head, and more. Of those injured, 3 are in critical condition and seeking treatment at the University of New Mexico Hospital.

Names of the three deceased have been withheld until relatives can be notified, but it’s been confirmed the driver of the car was one of those who were killed in the accident.
