Federal Judge Allows Roundup Lawsuits to Proceed

FEDERAL JUDGE ALLOWS LAWSUITS OVER MONSANTO’S ROUNDUP TO PROCEED TO TRIAL

On July 10, 2018, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria in San Francisco ruled there was sufficient evidence for hundreds of lawsuits against Monstanto Co to proceed to trial. Lawsuits have been filed across the country against the mega-corporation for their product, Roundup, the most widely used herbicide in the world

Roundup’s main ingredient is glyphosate, an organophosphorus compound recent studies reveal may lead to deadly forms of cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Monstanto Co is currently faced with 5,000 lawsuits nationwide, 400 of which have been consolidated before Judge Chhabria. This comes after years of litigation and hearings related to the scientific controversies regarding the safety on this product’s key ingredient.

Going forward, plaintiffs will need to prove that exposure to Roundup caused cancer in specifically selected people during test trials. While Judge Chhabria believes this will be a “daunting challenge,” he also stated that a reasonable jury could conclude, based on the findings of experts, that glyphosate can cause cancer in humans.
