NEW INVESTIGATION OPENS AFTER REPORTS OF ’13 FORD ESCAPES STALLING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS
Federal regulators are currently determining the need for a recall of 2013 Ford Escape vehicles after receiving complaints of the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine stalling at highway speeds.
A report posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website shows investigation PE 18-007 opened on July 16, 2018, to determine the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect. The Failure Report Summary indicates 40 vehicle owners of the 2013 Ford Escape have experienced this defect while driving, two of which reported vehicular accidents because of the defect. The complaints received by the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) “allege the stalling was caused by an overheating of the engine resulting in delayed or no restart possible.”
A 2013 Ford Escape owner from Colorado experienced this issue earlier this year, stating “[The] Car says engine overheating and completely disables the car’s engine to where it will stop you mid-driving. I was going 70 miles per hour, got the warning, and immediately the car dropped my speed to five miles per hour in the middle of the highway.”
If this investigation finds reason for concern, it could potentially lead to a recall of approximately 127,000 vehicles. Ford has already recalled over 500,000 2013-2014 Ford Escape vehicles earlier this month due to rollaway dangers.
