ST. LOUIS JURY ORDERS JOHNSON & JOHNSON TO PAY $4.69 BILLION IN TALCUM POWDER VERDICT

Johnson & Johnson has now suffered its biggest legal setback yet after successfully appealing three talc verdicts worth $544 million combined.

On Thursday, J&J was ordered to pay $550 million in compensatory damages and $4.14 billion in punitive damages by a Missouri jury. The trial, lasting over a month, combined claims of 22 women who allegedly developed ovarian cancer from exposure to talcum powder; six of which have died.

WHAT IS TALCUM POWDER?
Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder is a soft, dry powder used worldwide to help keep small children’s skin soft, smooth, and irritation free. The powder is designed to absorb moisture off of the skin, cause less friction in sensitive areas, and be hypoallergenic.

In response to the verdict, J&J stated it is “deeply disappointed in the verdict, which was the product of a fundamentally unfair process that allowed plaintiffs to present a group of 22 women, most of whom had no connection to Missouri, in a single case all alleging that they developed ovarian cancer.”The St. Louis trial was also the first trial ruled on by a jury linking baby powder, asbestos, and ovarian cancer. Evidence presented by the Plaintiffs revealed that Johnson & Johnson’s talc products have contained asbestos for decades.

The Plaintiffs’ lead trial counsel hopes the “verdict will get the attention of the J&J board and that it will lead them to better inform the medical community and the public about the connection between asbestos, talc, and ovarian cancer.”
