Nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, and skilled nursing facilities are required by law to undergo regular inspections and to correct any problems or deficiencies.
According to a September 2017 Federal Report from the Department of Health and Human Services, Kansas nursing home inspectors failed to obtain evidence of correction of deficiencies in 52% of the surveys performed in 2014. Furthermore, the Report noted that 44% of the nursing homes were not inspected during the federally mandated period.
The lack of oversight and follow-up places residents of nursing homes at greater risk of harm and abuse. If these facilities are afforded a free pass by State and Federal Agencies, then the systemic problems of nursing home abuse will continue to grow at an alarming rate.
