According to CNN News, the La Porte, Texas company, Kurary American, Inc. experienced a high-pressure release that led to an explosion at their La Porte “Eval” facility located on Strang Road at approximately 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning. La Porte fire and EMS officials immediately responded, and disabled and de-pressured the facility. At this time, officials have declared that at least 22 people have been injured in a flash fire that resulted from a purported valve explosion. Injured persons were taken to area hospitals for burns that they have suffered, as well as injuries sustained from employees fleeing from danger. Two victims have been life-flighted to Harris County hospitals. There were approximately 250 employees and contract personnel inside the facility when the valve blew and sparked the fire.
Kurary American, Inc. specializes in chemical, fiber, and resin production. Houston is the U.S. Headquarters of the Tokyo-based specialty company, which employs approximately 800 people in the U.S. The Eval plant opened in 1986 and is the world’s largest ethylene vinyl alcohol plant, capable of producing 47,000 tons annually. There are four production lines on site.
