On June 28, 2018, a truck driver disregarded a stop sign, causing a three-vehicle collision just outside of Millersview, Texas which resulted in a man’s death. The Peterbilt truck tractor driver, identified as 48-year-old Luis Vega-Reyes from Miami, Florida, ran a stop sign on FM 765 at the intersection for U.S. 83 in Concho County. The truck driver first collided with a southbound 2005 Freightliner in the middle of U.S. 83, pushing the 18-wheeler into the northbound lane. Following the collision, the driver and sole occupant of a 2018 Chrysler van hit the Freightliner head-on. Concho County officials pronounced the Chrysler driver, 66-year-old Michael L. Vandervoort, dead at the scene.

Approximately 5,000 Americans are killed each year because of severe trucking accidents, not including passenger motor vehicles. The fatalities and injuries in truck accidents tend to be more extreme than in a car accident, given the vehicles’ large size and that they often collide with much smaller vehicles.
