The US government has issued a warning for users of the Peloton Tread+ – Peloton’s treadmill. This urgent warning comes after a series of dangerous incidents that occurred while using the machine – including the death of a child. This past Sunday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) stated it has become aware of the 39 accidents involving the treadmill. Amongst these, there have been many reports involving children being entrapped, pinned, and pulled under the belt. This treadmill presents a potentially fatal risk to children and pets and the CPSC has released a statement urging customers to “stop using the Peloton Tread+ if there are small children or pets at home. Incidents suggest that children may be seriously injured while the Tread+ is being used by an adult, not just when a child has unsupervised access to the machine.”Not long after the CPSC released their statement, Peloton responded that CPSC’s warning was misleading and that customers should not be worried about the Tread+ if the safety features are properly used. Peloton also stated that if you “remove the safety key and store it out of reach of children and anyone else who should not be able to start the Tread+.” They have also since released another statement giving insight to a new safety feature that they are working on. CEO and Co-Founder John Foley stated that the “Tread+ product team is working on a new software-enabled, backup access code that will provide an additional layer of protection against unwanted use of the Tread+.”
