According the ABC 7 Eyewitness News, an explosion and electrical fire in Chicago’s loop caused three CTA workers to suffer injuries, two of which were critical. The incident occurred Monday morning around 11 a.m. when an electrical panel “arced,” causing the flash fire. The CTA workers were performing maintenance in a ComEd substation connected to the CTA structure at 10 East Lake Street, east of North State Street.

The two CTA workers who were close in proximity to the transformer suffered extreme burns and were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where they remain in critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The third CTA employee suffered less injuries and was released from the hospital the same day as the incident.
