COLLIN COUNTY COMMISSIONERS URGE VOTERS TO APPROVE $750 MILLION ROAD PROJECT TO RELIEVE GRIDLOCK ISSUES
According to dallasnews.com, Collin County traffic gridlock has been a primary concern for commissioners, as the county is expected to double in size before 2030, exceeding the Dallas and Tarrant county populations by 2050.
On May 7, 2018 Collin County commissioners unanimously approved three propositions be placed on the ballot for the upcoming November 6 election. If passed, this will implement a $750 million budget for transportation improvements in Collin County and surrounding areas.
This budget will allocate $600 million for freeways, $140 million for arterial roads and thoroughfare projects, and $10 million for park and trail open spaces.
While roadwork alignments have not yet been finalized, there are talks of building a new north-south highway just east of U.S. Highway 75 and improving U.S. Highway 380. Judge Keith Self of Collin County said upgrading U.S. 380 is top priority.
It’s uncertain how this major road project will affect home and business owners in the area, especially those in rural areas outside McKinney city limits. This project will likely uproot hundreds of home and business owners with government property takings to make way for the new roadways. Judge Self stated, “We will do the best we can to impact the fewest people, but we’re building highways for people that are not here, frankly.”
