A San Francisco jury has awarded a former school groundskeeper $289 million in a lawsuit against the mega-corporation, Monstanto. Forty-six-year-old plaintiff Dewayne Johnson claims his heavy exposure to Monstanto’s widely-used herbicide, Roundup, caused his body to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The state Superior Court jury were in agreeance with Johnson’s claims and stated Monstanto should have listed the potential health hazard on their products’ warning labels.

The recent victory against Monstanto will likely set a precedent for the thousands of others who have cases filed around the country. This was the first case filed against Monstanto by a cancer patient to reach trial. The case was expedited because of Johnson’s terminal condition.

Dewayne Johnson used Roundup while employed in the San Francisco Bay Area school district. Working as a pest control manager, Johnson sprayed Roundup in large quantities which would often contact his skin when gusty winds were present. On one occasion, Johnson developed a rash after the weed killer soaked his entire body. Johnson read the product label and contacted the company but was never warned the product could cause cancer. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014.

After the verdict was announced this past Friday, Dewayne Johnson stated at a news conference, “I’m glad to be here to be able to help in a cause that’s way bigger than me.” He went on to say thank you “from the bottom of my heart” for the hard work put in by jurors, family members, and his lawyers.

Brent Wisner, Johnson’s lead trial lawyer, stated to the press, “A unanimous jury in San Francisco has told Monsanto: ‘Enough. You did something wrong and now you have to pay. There’s 4,000 other cases filed around the United States and there are countless thousand other people out there who are suffering from cancer because Monsanto didn’t give them a choice … We now have a way forward.”
