On February 26, 2024, the historic Smokehouse Creek Fire was started by faulty and out of date electrical equipment. The result was a catastrophic fire the likes which had never been seen in Texas before. Over 1,000,000 acres of Texas rangeland that is critical for the ranchers there who make a livelihood as cattlemen was burned down to the dirt before the fire could be put out. In addition to the devastation to the rangeland environment including the wildlife that lives there, countless cattle were lost and permanently injured. Buildings, equipment, and thousands of miles of fencing were also destroyed. Most tragically, there were also cases of the loss of human life.
