VIP Spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico has been shut down after authorities inspected the facility on September 7, 2018. An investigation was initiated after a client reported she contracted an infection following a Vampire Facial at the spa.

WHAT IS A VAMPIRE FACIAL?
A vampire facial is a treatment in which the face is exfoliated and then the customer’s own blood is rubbed onto the face. The exfoliation removes the dead skin cells on the face while the platelets in the blood are believed to stimulate cell turnover.

Vampire Facials were made popular by celebrity Kim Kardashian West, who posted images on social media that went viral after she received the facial treatment in 2013.

VIP SPA INVESTIGATION
The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) officials, New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department (NMRLD) representatives, and Barbers and Cosmetologists Board investigated VIP Spa on Friday, September 7th. NMDOH epidemiologist Dr. Michael Landen stated they were “alarmed by how VIP Spa stored, handled, and disposed of needles.”

According to an NMDOH report, practices were identified at the spa that could potentially spread blood-borne infections.

Officials are encouraging clients who have received treatments at VIP Spa to get tested for blood-borne infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. NMDOH Cabinet Secretary Lynn Gallagher said, “It is very important that anyone who received a vampire facial or other injection-related services at the VIP Spa in May or June of 2018 come to the Midtown Public Health Office for free and confidential lab testing and counseling,”

The VIP Spa was issued a cease and desist letter by the Board and closed immediately.
