On Thursday March 17, 2022, a chemical spill occurred at the Huntsman Industrial facility in Atwater Village located in Los Angeles, California, that prompted the evacuation of the chemical manufacturing facility as well as an order to shelter in place for nearby residents and schools.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the incident occurred during the transport of a product which resulted in a chemical leak. The product, Reninfusion 8610 (a one-component epoxy system), was being processed for transport when a valve broke which caused the release of a cloud. Reninfusion 8610 is used as a sealant or adhesive in a wide variety of industrial applications. The leak of the hazardous material sent a large cloud of smoke into the air over Northeast L.A.

Some residents in the area reported an unusual odor after the incident. LAFD recommended those who wished to leave the area to travel south, away from where the wind blew the vapor cloud. It was reported that at least two people were admitted to a nearby hospital with respiratory symptoms that may have been related to the leak. However, it can take up to 24 hours for any issues to develop.

A chemical leak such as this can cause a variety of injuries which include:

  • Respiratory and cardiovascular system damage
  • Chemical burns to the skin
  • Nerve damage
  • Neurological injury
